X-ray inspection is a widely used non-destructive testing (NDT) method in industries such as electronics, semiconductor, automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing. It allows internal inspection of components without cutting or damaging the part.
How X-ray inspection works An X-ray machine generates high-energy electromagnetic radiation (X-rays) from an X-ray tube. When X-rays pass through a test object, part of the radiation is absorbed depending on the material’s density, thickness, and atomic structure. • Dense materials (metal) absorb more → appear darker/white on the image • Less dense areas (voids, cracks, air gaps) absorb less → appear brighter/darker contrast depending on the system settings This difference in absorption creates a contrast image that reveals internal features.
Key components of an X-ray system X-ray Tube – generates radiation (kV controls penetration power) Detector / Imaging Sensor – captures transmitted X-ray intensity Controller & Software – converts signal into digital image for analysis Shielded Chamber – protects users from radiation exposure
How results are produced The detector converts X-ray intensity into electrical signals. The software processes the data into a real-time radiographic image. Engineers can then evaluate defects such as: • voids in solder joints • cracks or internal fractures • missing components • misalignment • delamination / inclusions For detailed analysis, the system can perform zoom, measurement, and image enhancement to quantify defect size and location.
Why X-ray inspection is important
X-ray testing provides fast and reliable defect detection while maintaining product integrity — especially for components where internal quality directly affects performance and reliability.
At OBSNAP, we supply X-ray inspection equipment and provide technical support to help customers improve defect detection, quality assurance, and production reliability.
